First flown on May 30, 1958, initial deliveries were made simultaneously to both United and Delta Airlines. Originally equipped with turbo-jet engines by Pratt & Whitney, the DC-8 operated in the -10, -20, and -30 series. At the request of many foreign carriers, a Rolls Royce version was made available, and was identified as the -40 series. As the popularity of the DC-8 grew, many operators sought the more powerful Pratt & Whitney fanjet model, which first flew in December of 1960. This version, known as the ?50 series, became the basis for all future developments of the DC-8, and many of the earlier types were converted to the fanjet standard in later years. Although the standard DC-8 has now been mostly relegated to hauling freight, there are many examples still flying of this versatile, robust airliner.
